Women who eat large amounts of red meat may be at increased risk of stroke, according to a new study of more than 30,000 Swedes.
Researchers found that people who ate at least 102 grams of red meat a day were 42 percent more likely to suffer a stroke due to blockage of blood flow to the brain than women who ate less than 25 grams of the product a day. .
Red meat diets are associated with a number of side effects, including an increased risk of certain cancers, heart disease and high blood pressure, the researchers said.
In the study, which began in 1997, Dr. Susanna Larson of the Carolingian Institute in Stockholm and her colleagues included 34,670 women, in excellent health, aged 39-73.
During the ten years of follow-up, 1,680 women, or 4% of all participants, suffered a stroke. 78% of them suffer a stroke, the researchers explain.
When the researchers divided the participants into groups according to the amount of red meat consumed, they found that those who ate at least 86 grams a day had a 22% higher risk of heart attack than women who ate -Less than 36.5 g per day.
Women who consume processed meat, at least 41.3 g per day, are at 24% higher risk of this type of stroke than women who consume less than 12.1 g per day.
