About 80% of the rowan is water. It contains proteins, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, free organic acids, a complex of vitamins and minerals that the body needs, namely: provitamin A, vitamin PP, vitamins B1, B2 and C. The fruit has a lot of potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron and a number of other micro- and macronutrients, also vitamins P, K, E, carotene, glucose, fructose, organic acids and tannins. In ripe fruits, the presence of provitamin A is higher than in carrots, and vitamin C - than in lemons. All this, plus P - vitamin-active tannins, makes mountain ash an extremely valuable medicinal product.
Recommended for atherosclerosis, has diuretic and hematopoietic effects. The juice of the fruit is used in hemorrhoids, gastritis with low acidity. The phytoncides in the composition are detrimental to Staphylococcus aureus, salmonella, mold. Sorbic acid, which has bactericidal properties and is used to preserve juices and fruits, is released from rowan.
An important element are pectins, which are able to gel in the presence of sugars and organic acids. Pectins prevent excessive fermentation of carbohydrates, which manifests itself in the suppression of gas formation in the intestine. Parasorbic and sorbic acids stop the growth of microorganisms, fungi and mold. Sorbitol reduces the content of fat in the liver and cholesterol in the blood.
Amygdalin in rowan berries increases endurance of oxygen starvation. It is defined as an ingredient with radio- and X-ray protective properties. It is involved in protecting fats from peroxidation, as a result, mountain ash is used in folk medicine for atherosclerosis.
Rowan berries are used in both fresh and dried form, are used as a therapeutic and prophylactic agent in conditions associated with vitamin deficiency. Fresh fruit juice is recommended for reduced acidity of gastric juice.
The fruits are used to make jams, marmalades, juices, syrups, which reduce the permeability and fragility of capillaries; have a beneficial effect on cholesterol metabolism; have anti-edematous (dehydrating) properties; the ability to inhibit the processes of putrefaction and fermentation of the intestine, are useful in basal disease, stimulate blood circulation. In addition, it should be noted that the complex of organic and inorganic substances in the fruits of mountain ash , to some extent, increases blood clotting. In case of tendency to bleeding, this is useful, and in case of predisposition to thrombosis - mountain ash should not be abused.
Ripe rowan juice is an excellent laxative, relieves hemorrhoids.
The fruits are used for constipation, for the treatment of warts, as a multivitamin for exhaustion and anemia, for inflammation of the gallbladder - to increase the acidity of gastric juice. Fresh fruits are used in dysentery
