Scientists Have Chosen The Most Useful Diet

Scientists from the University of Leicester became the authors of the study, during which specialists studied the diet of various groups of the population of Great Britain in the 19th century. It turned out that the type of food, which was widespread among poor peasants, had the most positive effect on people's health.

The "poor" diet of poor peasants made it possible to maintain better health and prolong life compared to city dwellers, British experts said in particular. They established that the forced diet of poor rural residents of the studied historical period is similar in effect to the modern Mediterranean diet.

According to scientists, the peasants of the Victorian era ate simply, but at the same time correctly. Their healthy diet was largely connected with the fact that the peasants were often paid for their work not by money, but by products. City dwellers, in contrast to them, had more money and more choice among not the most useful food at least, for example, among sweets.

In the cookbooks of the 19th century, such dishes of peasant cuisine as potato pie, oatmeal and stewed beef cheeks were mentioned. In addition, a lot of beans and cabbage, lentils, cheese were used.

"The study showed that the consumption of simple products, such as fresh vegetables, cereals, milk, fish and a little meat, is the best recipe for health," the authors of the project concluded.

The Mediterranean diet, with which scientists have compared the "peasant diet", is not strictly a diet, but a set of nutritional principles characteristic of the Mediterranean, which includes 16 countries. The basis of the Mediterranean diet is the cuisine of Spain, Italy and Greece. It is traditional for them to eat a large amount of seasonal vegetables and fruits, greens, legumes, nuts, whole-grain cereals, wholemeal bread, durum wheat pasta, and olive oil.

Regarding meat and poultry, the Mediterranean diet shows restraint, pork is rare on the menu, but there is a lot of fish and seafood. As for dairy products, they are mainly sour-milk natural products, as well as soft cheeses with a low fat content. Just milk or milk dishes are not popular in this diet.
