Americans have concluded that the amino acid arginine can help fight obesity. Rich in such are seafood, seaweed, watermelon juice, nuts, some meats, soy products and others.
According to G. Lou, a nutritionist and senior researcher in the Department of Veterinary Science at the University of Texas, A&M arginine supplements redirect degraded nutrients to increase muscle mass.
In the laboratory, rodents were subjected to a low- and high-fat diet. Adding arginine for about 12 weeks reduces fat accumulation in both diets by 65 and 63%, respectively. No side effects are registered. In pigs, observations showed limited fat accumulation and increased muscle mass.
According to the researchers, the serum level of branched-chain amino acids is also reduced. They are associated with insulin resistance in obesity.
