A number of studies have long established the harm of sugary drinks and the increased risk of obesity , diabetes and stroke.
The study involved 40,000 people between the ages of 40-60. The duration of the study was 18 years, during which time the participants' eating habits, including the consumption of soft drinks, were documented .
During the study period, almost 2,000 of the volunteers suffered a stroke.
The researchers found that those who consumed soft drinks on a daily basis were at increased risk of developing blood clots that were responsible for the stroke.
Of all the participants in the study, the risk was much higher among women who consumed soft drinks on a daily basis. They are 80% more likely to have an ischemic stroke , the research team explains.
The results and data from the study are published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition .
