However, consuming too much sugar carries a risk of developing mental illness in the long run, according to a new study by lead author Annika Knupel of the Institute of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London in the UK.

Knupel's team is ambitious and analyzes the data from Whitehall Study II , a study involving 10,308 participants aged between 35 and 55, which allows the calculation of daily sugar intake. The study lasted for 22 years, with participants regularly filling out questionnaires for sugar-containing products, such as soft drinks, desserts, tea and coffee. The questionnaires also included questions about their physical and psycho-emotional health. 
 
Unlike men with the lowest daily sugar intake ( below 39.5 g ), those with the highest daily intake of 67 g are 23% more likely to develop mental illness after 5 years. This conclusion was made after taking into account and removing other adverse factors such as socio-economic status, other eating habits, health.
 
 
 
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 13% of the daily caloric intake of Americans over the age of 20 comes from the consumption of sugar, ingested with soft drinks, cakes and biscuits, candy and ice cream.  
 
Researchers point out that the positive effect of eating something sweet is short-lived. Usually people with unstable emotional state consume too many sweet foods. In most cases, eating them is to "sweeten life" and suppress some negative emotions. However, the results of the research team show that this practice has the opposite effect, and in fact sweets contribute to the deterioration of the psycho-emotional state. 
 
The study is published in the journal Scientific Reports.
