White refined sugar  is harmful, it is known. Excessive use leads to caries, diabetes and impaired metabolism. It is not necessary to give it up completely, but it must be consumed in moderation. In small quantities this product is useful. For example, it can restore the energy expended during intense mental activity. Lack of glucose in the body leads to mood swings, exhaustion, headaches, reduced efficiency. But too much is a prerequisite for depression, weakness, fatigue, strain on the pancreas, which is the cause of diabetes.

There are many varieties of sugar

  • Sucrose

Every day we use mainly sugar from sugar cane or sugar beet (sucrose), which is crystal sugar or in the form of lumps. It is more caloric and less useful, especially when we talk about large amounts. It refers to disaccharides and before it is absorbed in the intestines, it must, with the help of digestive enzymes, break down the monosaccharides fructose and glucose, which are a source of energy for the body, and this determines the benefit of the product. But sucrose causes calcium loss from bones, teeth and hair, which is one of its harmful effects.

  • Glucose and fructose - refer to monosaccharides and are absorbed from the intestine unchanged. The usefulness of them is not in doubt. Glucose is found in almost all sweet fruits, which also contain fruit sugar.
  • Maltose (malt sugar) - found in soybeans and Latin leaves. It is well absorbed by infants, as well as lactose (milk sugar). These two types of sugar are disaccharides and are well absorbed after their breakdown into monosaccharides.

White refined sugar - the harm

The results of experiments prove that refined white sweetness leads to the development of chronic diseases.

  • Elevated cholesterol

Scientists have found a link between sugar consumption and high blood cholesterol levels. The result of the study, published in the journal JAMA, proves that people who consume a lot of sugar have reduced the levels of "good" cholesterol in their body and have increased those of "bad".

For example, drinking sugary drinks causes atherosclerosis and clogged arteries.

  • Overweight

Obesity is a diagnosis that is made all over the world, and one of the main causes is sugar (respectively, the drinks containing it).

When a person eats improperly and infrequently, he experiences acute hunger. Eating candy or chocolate at such a time gives energy, so the blood sugar level rises sharply. But the decline is just as sharp, and it brings back the feeling of hunger. The result: many calories and no benefit.

In obese people, the hormone leptin, which is responsible for saturating the body and inviting it to stop eating, is poorly produced. It is sugar that inhibits the production of the hormone and is the cause of overeating.

  • Skin rashes and acne

Sugar-containing products are characterized by a high glycemic index. They quickly raise blood sugar levels. Such foods provoke the production of androgen hormones involved in the formation of acne.

  • Diabetes

Obesity, which is a consequence of the use of sugar, is the cause of impaired metabolism.
With prolonged consumption of sugar and sweets, the pancreas produces less of the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels. Less hormone, higher blood sugar. These factors lead to the development of diabetes.

  • Oncological diseases

As we have already said, the menu, rich in sweet products, leads to obesity. This increases the risk of developing cancer. Such a diet provokes inflammation of various organs and reduces insulin sensitivity, so the risk of this type of disease is higher. Research in this direction continues.

  • Depression

A sharp rise in blood sugar does not have a good effect on the mental state and leads to depression.

  • Skin aging

Consumption of sweets leads to the appearance of wrinkles.

  • Obesity of the liver

At the beginning of the article we mentioned that sugar consists of fructose and glucose. Fructose is broken down in the liver, where it is converted into glycogen and energy. But excess glycogen is deposited in the body as fat.

  • Load on the kidneys

High blood sugar damages the thin blood vessels in the kidneys, which increases the risk of developing diseases of the body.

  • Tooth decay

Bacteria in the oral cavity feed on sugar and release acidic substances, which destroys teeth and washes away minerals.

  • Lack of energy

Products containing only fast carbohydrates lead to a rapid jump in energy. They do not contain protein, cellulose and fat, so the blood sugar level drops quickly and a person feels exhausted. To avoid this, it is necessary to eat properly. For example, apples with walnuts can help for more energy.

  • Gout

Gout is expressed in joint pain. Sugar increases uric acid levels and increases the risk of developing the disease. If it is already present, the condition may worsen.

  • Mental disorders

Regular consumption of sugar impairs memory and increases the risk of dementia.

Daily sugar requirement:

  • Men - 150 kcal or 9 teaspoons
  • Women - 100 kcal or 6 teaspoons
