Drinks that contain a lot of sugar are associated with impaired kidney function.
A study conducted in the United States shows that people who drink drinks high in sugar are much more likely to develop chronic kidney disease than those who do not.
A total of 3,003 African-American men and women with a mean age of 54 years who had no kidney problems were studied. The study lasted between 8 and 10 years and according to the results 185 people or 6% of them developed chronic kidney disease after prolonged consumption of sugary drinks .
According to the results, the highest risk of kidney disease is the consumption of sweetened fruit juices , as well as soda, which was a big surprise for the research team. On the other hand, researchers did not know what brands of drinks people consumed.
Researchers also consider factors that can contribute to kidney damage, namely smoking , obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, immobility. Taking them into account, they found that in fact drinking mainly carbonated beverages such as soda or sweetened fruit drinks is associated with a 61% higher risk of kidney disease.
The study's lead author, Casey Rebholtz of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, said that sugary sweetened drinks had adverse health effects and also recommended avoiding them. According to her, such drinks should be limited, because in addition to kidney problems, they increase the risk of developing chronic diseases such as obesity , hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Holly Kramer of Loyola University in Chicago says that high consumption of sugary sweetened drinks is also associated with an increased risk of developing gout and type 2 diabetes. According to her, high sugar intake can lead to weight gain. , insulin resistance and high blood pressure. Dr. Kramer emphasizes that this seriously damages the kidneys, as the intake of sweetened beverages can impair their functions over time.
