Consumption of a cup of green or black tea can not only relax and invigorate us, but also improve brain activity, according to a new study. It was conducted by researchers from the University of Newcastle, UK.
Scientists have found that neurological activity increases about half an hour after consuming black or green tea. Improves memory and decision-making ability.
It is not clear exactly which ingredients lead to this beneficial effect on the brain , but according to previous studies in the field, the main credit goes to flavonoids . They remain unaffected even after adding milk to the drink. Flavonoids have so far been known to help control inflammatory processes , improve blood vessel function and reduce clogged arteries.
The researchers studied brain waves among volunteers who took part in the study to determine the effect of tea on various neurological functions. Eight participants were asked to consume a cup of green or black tea before measuring their brain activity . The electrodes attached to their heads "catch" an increase in three types of brain waves - alpha, beta and theta, within an hour after drinking.
There was a significant increase in theta waves between the 30th and 60th minute after consumption. The researchers explain that both types of hot drinks stimulate the activity associated with improving cognitive function . With regard to alpha and beta brain waves, no significant increase was found. But still it is noticeable.
Previous studies have found that regular consumption of tea helps prevent the development of type 2 diabetes, as well as reduce the progression of the disease when it is already a fact.
