The Antioxidant Effect Of Green Tea May Be Beneficial In Alzheimer's Disease

An antioxidant found in green tea can prevent the formation of amyloid fibrils in the brain, characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. It is the cessation of this process that underlies disease control strategies.

German experts want to use the antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) to convert fibril protein into a new type of molecule that does not have such a toxic effect on nerve cells. EGCG binds to the free fraction of the amyloid precursor protein and may therefore be the starting point for drug development. It is not known whether such a mechanism can be used in the removal of already formed plaques.

Conclusions about the effect of green tea are not yet clear and doctors do not recommend its consumption in order to prevent the disease.
