The low-calorie diet has greater benefits in reducing unwanted weight, according to a study by Taiwanese scientists at Chan Rong University, presented by the American Physiological Society (APS) .

Limiting food intake, especially high-calorie foods, leads to effective weight loss , but not everyone. Reducing the diet contributes to weight loss , but only in young individuals. In adults, it only helps maintain a normal body weight , which is important given the slowdown of metabolic processes after 35 - 40 years of age, which results in the natural accumulation of adipose tissue and weight gain.

The restrictive regime has two more effects: positive and negative, inversely proportional to age. Unfortunately, at a young age it also causes a decrease in muscle tissue . Contrary to this and the assumptions, in old age, which is usually characterized by lower muscle mass, this effect, it turns out that not only is missing, but the regime also contributes to muscle rejuvenation! ...

In the study The researchers studied two metabolic pathways: glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria.(OXPHOS) at a young and middle age. During the experiment, they followed these processes with a two-week normal diet and a two-week reduced diet, with the first diet limited to only 10% and the second to 25%. Subsequently, the follow-up continued until the regime was reduced to 40%.  

 



In addition to the mentioned effects, the researchers found that the low-calorie diet slowed down the rate of glycolysis in the muscles and instead increased the dependence of the cells on OXPHOS in middle age, which contributed to the positive effect on the muscles. The researchers were able to go even further - in two weeks of dieting, they were able to reprogram cellular metabolism by returning the relative proportion of OXPHOS and glycolysis in the muscles of middle-aged individuals to a young level.

The conclusion from this whole series of facts is that a relaxing diet or a reasonably limited diet in middle-aged people now has reason to be seen not only as a way to increase life expectancy ,improving general physical condition and health and as a prophylactic measure against cardiovascular disease , but also as a method leading to improved muscle metabolism and preventing muscle loss.
