Consumption of oil is not harmful and does not increase the risk of developing heart disease , researchers say. They found that consuming one tablespoon of oil a day had very little effect on overall mortality and had no significant association with the development of cardiovascular disease . According to experts, it may even have a small effect in reducing the risk of diabetes .
The study is the largest meta-analysis that examines the health effects of oil consumption. Researchers at Tufts University in Boston, USA, analyzed the results of 9 studies conducted by researchers from 15 countries, including the United States, Britain and Europe.
They include data from nearly 640,000 people, whose average age is between 44 and 71 years. The number of deaths among all of them is 28,000, nearly 10,000 are cardiovascular diseases and about 24,000 - cases of diabetes .
By combining and standardizing the results, the researchers found that daily consumption of 14 g of oil , which is about 1 tablespoon, is associated with a 1% increase in the risk of death.
No significant association was found between oil consumption and the development of any type of cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease and stroke .
According to the American Heart Association, heart disease and stroke are the leading cause of death worldwide.
A smaller sample of results shows that eating butter daily reduces the risk of diabetes by 2%. Experts emphasize that its results are subject to further research.
