The Seedless Cherimoya Fruit - The Useful Banana ?!

Scientists are trying to get the appearance of the useful seedless cherimoya fruit ...

Scientists are trying to get fruit that does not have seeds, according to a new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers are trying to achieve the appearance of seedless cherimoya fruit. "Cherimoya may be the next banana," said Charles Gasser, a professor of plant biology at the University of California, Davis.

Cherimoya is a delicacy tree fruit from the anon family. It is found in the mountains of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. The fruit has an apple-like shape and can weigh up to 2-3 kilograms. The fruit is often called a sugar apple.

Cherimoya seeds are black and hard. They are released upon consumption.

Fruit salads, jams, marmalades and various desserts can be prepared from the fruit. The taste of cherimoya resembles a taste mixture of pineapple, mango, banana and strawberry.

Seedless varieties of commercial fruit are usually achieved by selective breeding and vegetative propagation. Researchers have found that genetically defective plants fail to produce seeds and fruit. It is with the help of this gene that scientists are trying to produce seedless fruit.

The study also sheds light on the evolution of flowering plants, says Gasser. The project is funded by the Spanish government, the European Union and the American National Science Foundation, Gasser added.
