The Standard Glucose Test Is Not Suitable For Obese Children

Currently used screening tests for pre-diabetic condition in obese children is not appropriate according to Canadian experts.

The screening tests currently used for prediabetes in obese children are not appropriate, according to Canadian experts. The data are from a study among 172 children with problem weight who joined a program to reduce it. In this test, the fasting blood sugar level is checked.

More reliable information is obtained from the oral carbohydrate tolerance test, which, however, requires more time. After counting the value of fasting blood sugar, it is checked two hours after drinking glucose solution.

Prediabetes and metabolic syndrome are common in obese children. They often do not have an external clinical manifestation, which is why their detection by screening programs is important because they can be easily reversed at an early stage if appropriate measures are taken.
