Unhealthy Food Tax In Taiwan

The tax will be levied on sweetened drinks, sweets, candies, alcohol and "fast" snacks ...

To limit the effects of obesity and poor diet, health officials in Taiwan will take strict measures. It is planned to introduce the world's first tax on harmful foods. The tax will be levied on sweetened beverages, pastries, sweets, alcohol and snacks, according to AFP.

If the bill is approved by parliament, it is expected to enter into force in 2011.

The money collected from the taxes will be used to finance organizations that work to improve health, will be used for programs that promote healthy eating, active lifestyle and the fight against excess weight, or will subsidize the national health insurance program.

This will make Taiwan the first country in the world to impose a tax on junk food.
