Roasted and raw walnuts have been shown to be more beneficial for heart health than other types of nuts, according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania, compared the amount of polyphenols found in 9 types of roasted and raw nuts and two types of peanut butter. With the help of laboratory tests, they also test how effective the antioxidants in the products are in terms of heart health.
Whether roasted or raw, walnuts beat the competition. They have the highest content of polyphenols, which are useful for reducing the risk of heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol levels, improving blood flow and preventing inflammatory processes.
In addition to having all the nutrients needed for a healthy diet, walnuts contain high levels of protective antioxidants that counteract the effects of harmful free radicals.
Moreover, nuts that are high in fat do not necessarily lead to weight gain, the researchers found.
After raw walnuts, nuts with a high polyp content are:
- Brazil nuts
- pistachios
- American walnuts
- peanuts
- almonds
- macadamia
- porridge
- hazelnuts.
Among the roasted nuts runners of walnuts are:
- Brazil nuts
- hazelnuts
- peanuts
- American walnuts
- porridge
- macadamia
- almonds
- pistachios.
