Consumption of walnuts twice a week can reduce the risk of developing type II diabetes by almost ¼.
About 140,000 volunteers took part in the study. The research team analyzed the eating habits and health data of the participants. The results show that women who consume about 28 grams or a packet of walnuts at least twice a week have a 24% lower risk of developing type II diabetes.
Further studies are needed to determine whether eating walnuts has the same beneficial effect against diabetes in men.
The results and findings of the study are published in the journal Nutrition .
Walnuts are a rich source of antioxidants, fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals. Precisely because of their valuable substances, they rank first among nuts as a healthy natural product.

A handful of walnuts contains twice as many antioxidants as other nuts. They provide 8% of the daily intake of antioxidants.
A previous study found that walnut consumption reduced C-reactive protein levels (an inflammatory marker associated with atherosclerosis and heart disease) by almost 75%, total cholesterol by 11% and bad LDL cholesterol by 11-12 %. This makes walnuts extremely useful nuts for people with type II diabetes with an increased risk of cardiovascular problems.
