In order to absorb all the useful substances and get the most out of walnuts, it is recommended to consume 7 of the nuts a day.
Walnuts are a serious source of antioxidants, fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals. Precisely because of their valuable substances, walnuts rank first among nuts as a healthy natural product, scientists say.
In addition to having all the nutrients needed for a healthy diet, walnuts contain high levels of protective antioxidants that counteract the effects of harmful free radicals.
Nuts provide 8% of the daily intake of antioxidants.
Studies show that regular consumption of nuts reduces the risk of heart disease, some cancers and type 2 diabetes. Until now, however, it was not clear which nut is number 1 in health. To answer this question, scientists analyzed 9 different types of nuts: walnuts, almonds, peanuts, pistachios, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, pecans and macadamia nuts.
A handful of walnuts contains twice as many antioxidants as other nuts, says study leader Dr. Joe Vinson of the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. Scientists have found that the substances contained in them are between 2-15 times more powerful than vitamin E, known for its antioxidant properties.
In order to absorb all the useful properties and get the maximum benefit for our health, it is recommended to consume 7 raw walnuts a day. Heat treatment takes away from the antioxidant properties in nuts, advises Dr. Joe Vinson.
