We Consume More And More Meat

This finding pushes us further into the food chain and puts us closer to predators like polar bears.

A new study examines how people's eating habits change over time. The findings show an increase in fat and meat consumption - a factor that "pushes" us further into the food chain and puts us closer to predators such as polar bears.

Experts explain that this could lead to potential adverse effects on the environment .

The study measures the human trophic level - our place in the food chain in 176 countries. Data from 102 types of food described by the US Food and Drug Administration were used.

The head of the study, Sylvian Bonhomiu, found that the average trophic level of people "jumped" by three percent over a period of 50 years.

Researchers are trying to calculate the trophic level in order to better understand our place in the ecosystem, as well as the human impact of the environment . And according to experts, meat production has a much greater impact on the environment than vegetable production .

Increased meat consumption is partly due to the fast-growing economies of China and India.

The results of the study are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences .
