Researchers at Ben-Gurion University in the Negev in Israel conducted a study involving a group of volunteers with type 2 diabetes. They are also more likely to develop cardiovascular disease. For this purpose, the authors of the study selected 224 people who met these characteristics and did not drink wine. They were divided into groups, each of which had to drink different drinks: mineral water, dry white wine and dry red wine. Blood samples were also taken from them at the beginning of the study, after six months and in the second year, so that scientists could look at lipid biomarkers and liver function.

 

They found that people who drank red wine had higher levels of good cholesterol than those who drank only water.


 

Those who drank red or white wine also reported better sleep quality than the group who drank only water. It is important to note that the researchers did not find significant adverse effects in any group.

 

Dr James O'Keefe, head of preventive cardiology at the St. Luke's Heart Institute in Kansas City, who was not involved in the study, said he was not surprised by the results. The best results are shown by the group that consumed red wine. It is known to have 13 times higher levels of resveratrol than white. Red wine also contains some antioxidants that are difficult to find in other drinks. 

 

According to Dr. James O'Keefe, drinking a glass of red wine with dinner also has a beneficial effect on blood sugar, because an hour later, it will be 30% lower. He recommends combining red wine with vegetable dishes,  fish , but not meat, fruit and dessert.

 

On the other hand, according to him, drinking alcohol every night can trigger addiction, which is not recommended.
