Which Coffee Is Healthier?

Which coffee is the most useful? Coffee: health benefits and harm. Coffee for cancer prevention

Back in 2010, Swedish scientists from Umeå University first investigated how the method of coffee preparation affects its beneficial properties. At the time, the favorite drink was still suspected of being carcinogenic, but a 15-year follow-up of 64,603 residents of the province of Västerbotten showed that coffee brewed in a Turkish coffee maker is better than filtered coffee: its consumption was associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer.

Later, a meta-analysis of 59 independent studies confirmed that coffee reduces the overall incidence of cancer, in particular - cancer of the bladder, colon and rectum, liver, endometrium, esophagus, pancreas, breast and prostate.

There was limited evidence that coffee was associated with an increased risk of stomach and bladder cancer, but in 2016 experts from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that there was no conclusive evidence for this link. In June 2016, WHO removed coffee from the list of probable carcinogens, where it had been for 25 long years. Now the aromatic drink is deservedly recognized as part of a healthy diet.

There is little information about "healthy" brewing methods or varieties of coffee, but the information we have today allows us to highlight several key characteristics of healthy coffee:

  • Caffeinated coffee is healthier than decaffeinated. Apparently, this is due to the fact that when caffeine is removed from grains, many antioxidants are obtained, which fight against oxidative stress and inflammatory reactions.
  • Coffee is good as long as you eat good food and don't smoke. It is obvious that a cup of coffee drunk "with a cigarette" will not save you from the harmful effects of tobacco smoke.
  • The temperature of healthy coffee should not exceed 65 °C: in June 2016, the International Institute of International Health recognized hot drinks as carcinogens, suspecting them of involvement in the development of throat and esophagus cancer.
  • Healthy coffee does not contain sugar. Regular consumption of sweet drinks is a direct road to diabetes, atherosclerosis and other problems. Have you thought about giving up sugar?
  • Brewed coffee is better than instant coffee. A study found that a cup of instant coffee with a meal reduced iron absorption from 5.88% to 0.97%. However, an hour after a meal, the method of coffee preparation no longer affects iron metabolism.
