One of the most disturbing and incomprehensible phenomena for many people is how just a light bite can transform their tidy and tight area in the stomach area into a swollen abdomen and unlock the unpleasant feeling of heaviness and pain .

 

Swollen abdomen is definitely an unpleasant condition that can create chronic complaints or appear only at certain times. In both cases, there is discomfort , and the best way to prevent it is to avoid foods that trigger the problem.

 

Swelling of the abdomen is a consequence of the accumulation of gases or fluids along the gastrointestinal tract. The main reason for this is the inability of certain foods to be completely broken down. The foods that most often cause such problems are those rich in non-degradable but fermentable simple sugars. They pass through the stomach without being affected by the enzymes in the gastric juice and are not digested in the small intestine.

 

Reaching the large intestine, however, they are used as a food source by bacteria in the intestinal flora. A fermentation process takes place in which some of the non-degradable and indigestible nutrients are transformed into others, releasing a large amount of gases during the reaction. They lead to specific bloating and create characteristic discomfort.

 

The foods that pose the most serious risk of bloating are:

 

 

  • Cruciferous vegetables - broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts. The danger of bloating is most serious when consumed raw or pickled ;
  • Legumes - beans, peas, lentils. The problem of bloating after consumption can be partially solved by pre-soaking before cooking, which makes legumes more easily degradable;
  • Cereals - they are a major cause of bloating and other gastrointestinal disorders in people with gluten intolerance, but not only. Even people with a healthy stomach may experience some problems after consuming more cereals, in whatever form;
  • Onions  - both white and water onions in raw form are rich in a specific type of soluble fiber - the so-called. fructans. Although mainly consumed in small amounts, onions can cause bloating in people who have difficulty tolerating fiber. The problem occurs less frequently after culinary processing of onions;
  • Apples - among the fruits, this is the most problematic choice for people with chronic stomach problems. The simultaneous high content of fiber and fructose creates a risk of abundant fermentation in the colon and sharp bloating after eating raw apples;

 

Eating these types of foods should not cause problems in people with healthy ostomas. In some cases, however, even a temporary imbalance of gastric secretion can lead to bloating, and these foods pose the most serious risk. It is good to regulate their consumption in people with chronic gastrointestinal problems such as colitis , permeable or irritable bowel syndrome and others.
