A dehydrated driver is just as dangerous to road users as an alcoholic.
This shows a new study by a British team, which found that unquenchable thirst makes as many mistakes on the road as in a drunken state.
Within two days, the experts conducted tests on 350 male drivers using a simulator .
On the first day, the volunteers had to drink two glasses of water before getting behind the wheel. At that time, 47 road accidents were reported.
On the second day, drivers did not drink water, and the number of accidents increased by more than 100% - then a total of 101 accidents were registered.
Dehydration was mainly due to the "serving" of the car on the road, delayed reactions for stopping, entering the banquet and illegal turning.
The study showed that drivers should be encouraged to pay special attention to sufficient water intake.
The European Hydration Institute , which is sponsoring the study, warns drivers to pay close attention to whether they have drunk enough water before getting behind the wheel, especially during the summer months.
Many drivers avoid drinking water during long journeys to minimize toilet stops.
It is already known with certainty that even mild dehydration can cause symptoms such as headaches, fatigue and drowsiness and this should be prevented, they say.
