The trend of obesity is observed mainly in economically developed countries. The risk to the health of people in lower-income countries is not so great, according to the organization. Although such is also found among developing countries that mimic the Western way of life.
Rising obesity in industrialized countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States is leading to an increase in the incidence of heart and cancer and diabetes.
Statistics show that Mexico and South Africa are the hardest hit by the "obesity epidemic". The weakest trend is obesity in India - 20% and China - 30%.
The OECD report recommends that the countries with the highest obesity rates take immediate action. This could be done through media campaigns to promote healthy lifestyles, develop different diets, tighten food labeling, and limit food advertising.
