Consumption of five or more servings of yogurt a week can prevent women from developing hypertension , according to a study.
It is the largest of its kind and includes data from thousands of people. Regular consumption of yogurt has been found to reduce the incidence of high blood pressure by one-fifth compared to people who consume only one serving of yogurt per month.
The effect is more visible among women, as men consume significantly less yogurt, the researchers explain.
The benefits of regular yogurt consumption are even more noticeable among people who eat a lot of fruits , vegetables , nuts and legumes.
Researchers point out that according to previous studies, daily consumption of dairy products, in particular yogurt, lowers blood pressure levels . They add that hypertension is a major health risk factor.
For the study, information from another study on the health of nurses was used, which included data from more than 240,000 people. Most of them are women and are between 25 and 55 years old. Data from a second study of 51,000 health professionals, most of them men between the ages of 40 and 75, were also used. The mechanism by which yogurt affects blood pressure levels is not yet clear .
According to some researchers, the bacteria in it may play a role in lowering cholesterol levels , which has to do with raising blood pressure.
Researchers have also found that yogurt can be beneficial against osteoporosis , as well as reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems.
The study was presented at a conference of the American Heart Association.
