Stomach acids affect 1/3 of the Bulgarian population.

The symptoms by which we can distinguish them are the feeling of bitter or sour taste in the throat, "bloating" of the stomach, rumbling or belching. Burning usually occurs after eating and can last for several hours.

The ingested food moves through the esophagus and enters the stomach. The connection between them is an annular muscle - a sphincter that opens when food passes and closes after it enters the stomach. If the annular muscle does not function properly, stomach acids spread up the esophagus during food processing. There they irritate the mucous membrane and cause burning.

However, heartburn can be prevented by avoiding the foods that cause it.

  • Citrus fruits . Oranges, grapefruits and their juices can cause heartburn, especially if consumed on an empty stomach, says Dr. Robin Chutkan, a gastroenterologist at Georgetown Hospital in Washington.
  • Tomatoes and tomato sauces . Although tomatoes are rich in beneficial nutrients, such as lycopene, they are highly acidic and can provoke complaints. It is important to promote salivation because it neutralizes the acid that comes from the stomach, explains gastroenterologist Dr. Daniel Mausner.
  • Onions and garlic are  also on the list of foods that cause discomfort.
  • Spicy foods . Any food prepared with pepper and other spices can lead to the formation of acids. Therefore, in the presence of such, such products should be avoided, experts say.
  • Alcohol . Wine, beer and other types of alcohol increase the production of acids. In addition, they are often consumed with other beverages, such as tomato or orange juice or carbonated beverages, which also cause stomach problems.
  • Caffeine . Consumption of coffee, tea, and other products containing caffeine can cause heartburn. The ingredient irritates the inside of the stomach, which increases the production of acids. Even decaffeinated coffee is acidic.
  • Chocolate . The content of theobromine, fat and cocoa in chocolate products increases the risk of heartburn.
  • Smoking is also a factor that has a negative effect on the stomach.

To deal with the problem, several lifestyle adjustments are needed - in addition to a change in diet, which should include foods with low acid content, it is recommended to provide moderate physical activity, reduce stress.

Keep a diary of foods that cause symptoms, as well as "safe" products such as roasted chicken, baked sweet potatoes, toast, cottage cheese and more. This will help avoid discomfort.
