A Glass Of Red Beet Juice Lowers Blood Pressure

And 100 g of fresh beetroot contribute to lowering blood pressure. The effect is due to nitrates in beets.

Daily consumption of a glass of freshly squeezed beetroot juice is useful against high blood pressure and therefore reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke, researchers say.

A team from the University of Reading found that even small doses of the juice contribute to lowering blood pressure.

Previous studies have shown that drinking 500 ml of beetroot juice lowers blood pressure for 24 hours.

The new study aims to determine whether the same effect is observed when consuming smaller amounts.

Scientists have found that drinking only 100 g leads to a significant reduction in blood pressure, both in the short term - from 0 to 4 hours, and in the long term - from 0 to 13 hours.

According to researchers, the effect is due to the high content of nitrates in beets, which when ingested into the human body are converted into nitric oxide, which increases blood flow and maintains low blood pressure.

Beets contain an average of 88% water, 1.2% protein, 9.3% carbohydrates, 0.9% mineral salts, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, sulfur, iodine, small amounts of vitamin C, carotene, vitamins B1, B2 and B12.

Due to the presence of potassium salts, sulfur, phosphorus and magnesium accelerates metabolic processes in the body.

The study is published in the British Journal of Nutrition .
