Granadilla is the fruit of the plant Pasiflora ligularis, originating from South America. It is distributed in Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Peru. It looks like passion fruit, but even tastes better. Both species are from the same family - Passion Flowers and come from the same plant, but of a different variety.

The fruit is small in size, with an oval shape and a hard orange peel, under which is the fragrant, jelly-like inside. It is full of small seeds, which are consumed together with the meat and used in cooking.

Health benefits

Consumption of granadil has a healing effect, has antiparasitic, diuretic, stimulates breast milk. This is due to vitamins and minerals that are contained in the composition such as: vitamin B, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus.

It prevents respiratory diseases and strengthens the immune system. In addition, the fruit is low in fat and calories, contains fiber, which maintains the balance of intestinal microflora. Boiled, granadilla is used to suppress coughs, colic, and its juice as a painkiller. The leaves of the plant also have medicinal properties. A decoction is prepared from them, which improves the quality of sleep, purifies the blood, calms the nervous system and is used for skin burns.

The fruits have a low glycemic index, which makes them suitable for diabetics.
The rich set of vitamins - A, B1, B2, B3, B9, C, E, K provide effective protection of the immune system.
Consumption of the fruit improves mood and reduces anxiety, this is due not only to the pleasant taste, but also to the magnesium found in granadilla. The mineral is essential for lowering stress and anxiety levels.

Granadila stimulates the production of white and red blood cells, thanks to iron, potassium and B vitamins, which are found in the fruit.

The antioxidants in granadilla are similar to those in berries, and you know that they are richest in antioxidants that fight free radicals and inflammation.

Thanks to vitamin A, found in the fruit, you can protect your eyesight and reduce the damage caused by UV rays.

You can also consume granadilla as a means of increasing the absorption of iron, for this purpose add it to dishes that have sources of iron - such as meat, spinach, for a better effect mix with olive oil, lemon and honey.

The fruits of the plant can be eaten raw or cooked. In cooking they are used for making sauces, ice creams, desserts or fruit salads. Before using the granadilla, wash well and cut, with a spoon carve the pulp, which can be used in various dishes.


This type of passionflower is also grown as an ornamental plant because of its beautiful and fragrant flowers. Unlike the edible and applicable part, they are not consumed because they are toxic.
