Every year, overweight and obese people spend billions of dollars trying to lose weight. Professor Lean of the University of Glasgow hopes the EU will adopt a new directive on such commercial practices to protect vulnerable consumers from buying useless and ineffective treatments.
Unlike medicines, foodstuffs labeled as having a curative effect are not subject to appropriate strict controls. Allegations of high fiber content, low fat levels or cholesterol-fighting benefits are unlawful, without even proving the therapeutic effect of the drug, in this case obesity.
Unfortunately, such claims are made on products and therefore controls need to be strengthened. The adoption of a law will reduce abuse and predispose to proper treatment of obesity.
