Black Raspberries - The New Superfood

The content of powerful antioxidants in black raspberries can reduce the risk of developing various diseases.

It has long been known that green vegetables are rich in antioxidants . Now experts are finding a new superfood - black raspberries .

A team of Polish researchers finds that black raspberries contain three times more antioxidants than other, more famous berries.

The powerful antioxidants in the black variety can reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease , cancer, arthritis or respiratory disease.

To assess their potential health benefits, the researchers "measured" the phenols and anthocyanins in black raspberries, red raspberries and blackberries. It turns out that black raspberries have the greatest health benefits compared to other types of berries.

It is also found that black raspberries not only contain three times more antioxidants, but they also contain significantly higher levels of phenols and anthocyanins - two other substances that support health. In particular, their content is 1000% higher than other berries.

It also turns out that black raspberries also contain a larger amount of secondary metabolites, which have been proven to be beneficial to health.

The study data contribute to the characterization of the fruit, which, due to its high content and wide variety of healthy substances, is classified as a "natural functional food".

The researchers found that there was not much difference between black raspberries grown in the summer and those grown in the fall. This means that these fruits can be a quality and useful part of the diet throughout the year.

The study was conducted by a research team from the University of Agriculture in Krakow, Poland, and its data were published in Open Chemistry .
