A certain dose of caffeine may be helpful in lowering cholesterol levels in patients with Alzheimer's disease, according to the Journal of Neuroinflammation. Studies have shown that high cholesterol damages the blood-brain barrier, restricting the central nervous system from the systemic circulation. Such damage is observed among a number of neurological diseases, including Alzheimer's disease.

For the first time, long-term caffeine consumption has been shown to protect the blood-brain barrier from the harmful effects of hypercholesterolemia, said Jonathan Geiger, a specialist at the University of North Dakota Medical School. Other studies have shown that caffeine protects against memory impairment during aging and Alzheimer's disease.

As a drug for caffeine, great hopes are placed in the treatment of a number of neurological disorders, adds Geiger.
