5 cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of breast cancer in women over the age of 50, according to a new study from Carolina University in Sweden.

A recent study found that coffee consumption was responsible for more than 1 in 10 cases of cerebral aneurysms.

The results of the present study show that regular drinking of coffee reduces the incidence of malignant tumors of the breast by 20%.

In a rarer type of disease, such as ER-negative breast cancer, the effect is even greater, scientists say. The risk of developing the disease is halved in coffee drinkers compared to those who do not drink caffeinated beverage.

Older studies have shown that the protective effect against cancer is most likely due to the antioxidant properties of coffee.

For the study, a team from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden examined the medical records of nearly 5,000 women over the age of 50, nearly half of whom had survived breast cancer.

It has been found that those who drink more than 5 cups of coffee a day have a 20% reduced risk of developing breast cancer. When researchers tested for different types of cancer, they found that the largest reduction in cases of ER-negative breast cancer was reported - by 57%.

ER-negative cancer is less common, but also extremely difficult to treat.

The results are published in the journal Breast Cancer Research .
