Adherence to a diet provokes people to feel more irritable and negative, scientists say.
According to a study, people who choose to eat an apple instead of chocolate prefer movies with violence, anger and revenge than those with a lighter and more pleasant theme.
Another experiment showed that dieters had a more positive attitude toward a public policy message that used an anger-inducing appeal than a message with a sad message.
"We looked at whether exercising self-control could actually lead to a wide range of angry and violent behaviors and preferences afterwards, even when such behavior is quite insidious," said study authors David Gal of Northwestern University in Chicago and Wendy Liu of University of California.
The results show that self-control makes people more likely to be aggressive towards others and that those who follow a diet are irritable and quickly get angry, the researchers explain.
"Politicians need to pay more attention to the potential negative emotions that come from encouraging citizens to exercise more control in their day-to-day decision-making. Instead of behavioral interventions, they can rely on a wider range of methods to promote positive behavior toward long-term goals, ”said study leaders published in the Journal of Consumer Research .
