It is clear that a balanced diet is the basis of good health and many campaigns aim to teach us to eat properly. The importance of our menu in terms of diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, osteoporosis is shown. However, so far there are no data on the effects on cancer, AIDS or neurodegenerative diseases.

European experts claim that the emphasis on fruits and vegetables reduces the incidence of colon cancer. Processed fats and carbohydrates are a major aspect in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease and breast cancer. Lycopene in tomatoes has been cited as a protective factor against neoplastic processes, but the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not recognize the evidence as solid.

Good nutrition is also important for the treatment of HIV-infected patients, as malnutrition itself weakens the immune system. However, in no case can it replace antiretroviral therapy.
