For a balanced diet, we need to eat more dried fruit and avoid fruit juices, according to two new studies by two teams of scientists from the UK.
The findings of the first study show that even freshly squeezed fruit juice can contain an amount of sugar equal to 5 teaspoons, as the squeezing process itself concentrates the sweetness of the fruit. The amount is equal to 2/3 of the sugar content in 300 milliliters of carbonated drink, which raises blood sugar levels, disrupts metabolism and contributes to the accumulation of excess weight.
Scientists recommend limiting fruit juice to once every five days and emphasizing the consumption of fruits and vegetables. Dr. Hans-Peter Kubis of Bangor University in North Wales also explains that juices are one of the causes of tooth decay.
The general opinion that squeezed juice can serve as a substitute for the fruit is wrong - it has a higher sugar content than the fruit itself. However, to make it a healthier drink, experts recommend diluting one dose of fruit juice with four glasses of water.
In a second study, partly conducted by the University of Leeds, the researchers found that dried fruit contained as many antioxidants, polyphenols and nutrients as fresh fruit. In addition, they can fight tumors, heart disease and are useful in metabolic problems.
Dried fruits are a rich source of fiber, vitamins and minerals. According to Professor Gray Williamson, they are often overlooked because people find them too tasty to be useful.
