Propylene glycol  is used in the food industry as a moisture retainer. Names used to designate the additive: E 1520, propylene glycol, propylene glycol, propylene glycol.

E 1520 is a viscous liquid, colorless, with a faint characteristic odor and sweet taste. It has hygroscopic properties, boiling point 187-188º C, freezing point -60º C. The substance is obtained from petroleum products, after sublimation, purification and subsequent studies for compatibility with cells of animal origin. Chemical formula: C3H8O2. In practice, propylene glycol is non-toxic and non-hazardous by inhalation or accidental ingestion. However, it should not be inhaled intentionally. Interestingly, the vapors of the substance do not irritate the eyes and mucous membranes, do not cause allergic reactions.

In the food industry, propylene glycol is used as a emollient, moisture retainer and dispersant. It is part of oatmeal biscuits, soft drinks, soft drinks, carbonated and energy drinks, candies and other confectionery. Used for quick freezing of fruits (including forest), poultry. It is approved for use in some countries.

Large doses of the substance depress the nervous system. Excessive consumption of products containing E 1520 can damage the kidneys.
