Sorbitol refers to the stabilizers added to foods to maintain their consistency and viscosity. Pectin is characterized by a similar effect. E 420 can also be used as a moisture retaining agent, emulsifier and sweetener.
Sorbitol can be in the form of a concentrated aqueous solution, syrup or white powder. The additive dissolves well in water and has a pronounced sweet taste. It can be used as a substitute for sugar because the substance is significantly sweeter than it and lower in calories.
The food additive E 420 is used in confectionery and in the preparation of dietary foods. It is used as a sugar substitute in diabetics.
Sorbitol is used selectively in pharmacology because it can alter the properties of drugs (they may acquire toxic properties). The United States classifies E 420 as a substance dangerous to human health.
When using large amounts of the supplement, the following is observed: discomfort in the area of the gastrointestinal tract and increased gas formation. Intake of more than 50 grams of the substance per day is defined as dangerous to humans.
Sorbitol is not an allergen, but it can irritate the mucous membranes in the body. It has been shown to have an adverse effect on the visual organs. With long-term use of the supplement, diabetic retinopathy and damage to cellular functions in the body may occur.
The substance is prohibited for use in the manufacture of baby food.
