Characteristic

The additive is used to maintain the viscosity and improve the consistency of food products. It refers to substances that are considered harmless to the human body and is approved for use in the food industry. It is a clear liquid or white plates. It is obtained by esterification of propylene glycol of fatty acids with subsequent distillation of the substance in order to enrich it with monomers. Acceptable impurities: esters of propylene glycol.

Use

E 477 is widely used in the manufacture of:

  • emulsified fats and other means used in the making of pastries;
  • margarines, mayonnaises, liquid ice cream mixes and fat emulsions;
  • ready spices and dishes, spicy sauces;
  • cooking fats, oils, antifoams, frying fats;
  • flavorings and bases for beverages;
  • chewing gum and candy;
  • biologically active food supplements;

  • solid fats (as a regulator of crystal formation).

Impact on humans

The permissible daily dose for the use of the supplement is 25 mg.

The additive propanediol is not approved for use in the food industry. The given esters, with the help of the enzyme lipase, are broken down in the body, and the free propanediol substances are excreted by the kidneys.

Products with E 477 should be treated with caution in people with gastrointestinal disorders. The supplement is approved for use in some EU countries, but there is information that its excessive intake can lead to an increase in the liver and kidneys, as well as to disrupt metabolic processes in the body.
