Sodium carbonate is a colorless crystal and can be found in the form of granular or crystalline powder. The substance dissolves well in water, is practically insoluble in ethanol.
E 500 is mainly used as a stabilizer in the processing of meat products. First of all, these are cooked, smoked-cooked products containing meat (sausages, cooked and smoked sausages, meat rolls, etc.). Sodium carbonate is also found in the composition of products with cocoa in them (chocolate, candies, mousses, etc.) and powdered milk. In the form of a leavening agent it is used in all kinds of pastries, bakery and confectionery products.
In addition to the food industry, the additive is used in the manufacture of glass, in the manufacture of soaps, in the manufacture of aluminum, cellulose, pigments.
In case of excessive consumption of products containing the supplement, the following are possible: difficulty breathing, nausea, acute stomach pain. E 500 has an adverse effect on the liver, can cause rashes on the forehead, arms and head.
