Magnesium hydroxide refers to substances used as food additives, belongs to emulsifiers. The main purpose of E 528 is to regulate the acidity and stabilize the shades of the products. In appearance it is a crystalline white powder without odor, but has a weak alkaline taste. It is obtained from the natural raw material - the mineral brucite. It contains magnesium, which is needed to obtain the supplement.

Magnesium hydroxide is sensitive to high temperatures, does not dissolve in water and ethyl alcohol.

Use

E 528 is used in the production of cocoa products, cheeses, canned vegetables (marinades, sauces, pickles, etc.). In medicine, a suspension of magnesium hydroxide, known as magnesium milk, is used to neutralize stomach acids, as a laxative, to treat stomatitis. E 528 is part of toothpastes and antiperspirant deodorants.

Impact on humans

The additive E 528 is banned in Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia. Magnesium hydroxide is harmless to the body, but in high concentrations leads to stomach disorders, acts as a laxative.
