Vitamin B12 deficiency can reduce brain function and lead to gradual memory loss…
Vegetarians are at real risk of developing mental disorders, such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease, if they do not monitor their vitamin B12 levels, scientists warn.
Fish, mussels, meat, eggs, milk and their by-products are some of the biggest sources of vitamin B12, writes The Times of India.
"Vitamin B12 deficiency can reduce brain function and lead to gradual memory loss, which can negatively affect a person's daily activities. As vegetarianism becomes more popular and many people give up eating even dairy products, the risk of cognitive impairment increases significantly. Those who are lactose intolerant are also at greater risk for dementia, ”explains Dr. Praveen Gupta, a neurologist at the Artemis Health Institute in Gurgaon.
According to data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), in India, where the majority of the population is vegetarian, more than 3.5 million people suffer from Alzheimer's and dementia.
The authors of the study specify that in just one month, more than 30 patients under the age of 40 see a doctor with symptoms of depression, panic disorder, memory loss, coordination problems and all this, combined with vitamin deficiency. B12. If these patients take extra B vitamins in the form of a dietary supplement, there is a significant improvement in their condition, explains Dr. Gupta.
