Scientists explain that the amount of caffeine in energy drinks is up to three times higher than others such as coffee or cola.
Energy drinks that contain caffeine, can change the way beating heart, experts warn. A team of scientists from the University of Bonn, Germany, observed the hearts of 17 people, an hour after they consumed an energy drink.
The analysis shows that the contractions of the heart are more energetic after consuming such a drink. Scientists explain that the amount of caffeine in energy drinks is up to three times higher than in other drinks such as coffee or cola.
Many side effects associated with excessive caffeine consumption are known, including fast heart rate, palpitations, and high blood pressure. The researchers gave the participants a drink that contained 32 mg per 100 ml of caffeine and 400 mg per 100 ml of another chemical - taurine.
Experts show how the left ventricle of the heart, which pumps blood, begins to contract more vigorously just an hour after the energy drink is consumed.
It is not yet clear how this change, due to energy drinks, affects daily or sports activity. Its effect on people suffering from heart disease is also unclear.
However, researchers advise those who suffer from irregular heart rhythms not to consume such drinks.
