How is the diagnosis made?

There are several ways to diagnose allergies. In the case of older skin, scratches are scratched on the skin of the hand, on which a solution containing a certain allergen is dropped. The reaction (redness) indicates the presence of an allergy to the product. In the second, patches with allergens are applied to the skin for a certain period of time. After removing them by the reaction of the skin in the appropriate place, the presence of an allergy is judged. This usually results in redness, swelling, puffiness, and rash to varying degrees. The third type of allergy test is a blood test.
False positive or negative results may be obtained in all these tests.

Doctors usually prescribe a diet that avoids foods that are suspected of being allergic. Then each product is entered in the menu under careful control. The manifestations of the organism confirm or reject the allergy to it.

Allergy Therapy

At this stage, there are no medications to treat food allergies. An essential part of therapy is to avoid products that lead to an allergic reaction. Carefully inspect the contents of the package. For example, in case of allergy to milk, it is important that the product is not only milk-free, but also does not contain casein or whey, and in case of allergy to eggs, attention should be paid to the presence of egg products such as egg powder, melange and others.
Greater difficulties are encountered with allergies to several products.
According to research, probiotics help prevent and control allergies.

What is the difference between intolerance and allergy?

Often food allergies and food intolerances are taken for the same state of the body. The difference is that in case of food intolerance there is no reaction from the immune system. For example, people who are allergic to milk proteins (casein, whey, lactabumin) are allergic to milk and dairy products. Milk intolerance is caused by the reduced or inability to absorb milk, or more precisely the lactose in it, resulting in diarrhea, swelling, pain, but not vomiting or rash.

Intolerance to a product is determined by its gradual introduction into the diet after a period of abstinence from its consumption. Laboratory tests are also performed. For example, several blood tests are done to prove gluten intolerance . There is also a test to determine lactose intolerance.

In case of food intolerance, it is not necessary to completely exclude the food product, as in the case of allergies, but to avoid the ingredient that the body is not able to absorb. For example, people with lactose intolerance can safely consume certain dairy products, such as aged cheese and yellow cheese, goat cheese and yogurt with Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, which contain a small amount of lactose. Another option is to consume milk whose lactose has been technologically eliminated or to take enzymes that help digest it. Keep in mind that sometimes dairy products are not well tolerated by the gastrointestinal tract only temporarily.

In case you suspect a food allergy in a child, write down for a few weeks what products he consumes, the time of eating and the symptoms that appear afterwards. These notes will help the doctor assess his condition and suggest which foods he is allergic to. All factors such as stress, school workload, physical activity or visits to other homes must be taken into account.
