Food Poisoning

The diet should consist of light food that is easily absorbed by the body. It is necessary to choose products that do not require much effort for processing by the digestive system.

Food poisoning  is a dangerous condition of the digestive system that usually occurs 24 hours after eating food contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, toxins or viruses. Symptoms of poisoning are: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, sometimes fever.

Why is it important to follow a diet when poisoning?

It is extremely important that the diet includes healthy and light foods to strengthen and restore the body. Food poisoning can become a serious problem that sometimes requires medical attention, especially if you are experiencing dehydration or bloody stools.

What should we eat?

The diet should consist of light food that is easily absorbed by the body. The process of digestion begins with the chewing of food, continues in the digestive tract, so it is necessary to choose such products that do not require much effort for processing by the digestive system (for example, semolina porridge or steamed rice in chicken broth).

Vomiting and diarrhea lead to severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. To avoid dehydration, you should drink plenty of water and light herbal teas. It is important to compensate for the fluid loss with low-calorie beverages. Drink at least 1.0 liter of water daily.

Ginger and mint tea without milk can soothe an irritated stomach lining and relieve nausea.

What should not be consumed?

Exclude heavy and fatty foods, also those with high sugar content, for example, hot peppers, fatty foods, sweets, alcohol. All these products irritate the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines, which leads to digestive disorders and complications at a later stage.

The diet for food poisoning should not contain "heavy" sources of protein. It is necessary to avoid meat (for example beef) for several days after poisoning because products with high amounts of fat and protein are more difficult to digest and burden the digestive system. Choose light meats (chicken breast or fish), it is good to be steamed, baked or cooked in weak broths.

Dishes and foods that are raw or poorly processed are excluded from the menu because they are potential sources of harmful bacteria that can worsen the condition or cause another food poisoning. Products such as eggs, meat, fish need to be cooked for a longer time to kill bacteria.
