French scientists have tested the effects of various juices on arteries and found that arterial walls relax. It remains to be seen whether fruit juice could improve cardiovascular health.

The study is further evidence that fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of heart disease, according to the British Health Foundation. The substance that scientists are looking for in fruits is polyphenols.

Experts find that the most energetic fruits are blackcurrants, blueberries, chokeberries, cranberries and grapes. Tracy Parker, a heart health nutritionist with the British Health Foundation, explains that it is not yet clear why certain fruits and vegetables have more health benefits than others.

The study was published in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal, Food and Function .
