Eating enough fruits and vegetables protects against cancer, revealed three new studies. These facts were announced recently at the annual meeting of the American Cancer Research Association in Los Angeles. According to scientists, foods such as apples, blackberries, raspberries, broccoli, onions and cabbage have a protective effect against cancer.
The first of the study, which involved 183,518 men, focused on an antioxidant substance called flavonol, which is found in large amounts in apples, broccoli and raspberries. The results showed that the compound significantly reduced the risk of developing pancreatic cancer, especially in smokers. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly cancers, with the percentage of deaths within 5 years reaching 95%.
The second study looked at nearly 500,000 patients aged 50 years and older. The researchers found that twice the daily intake of fruits and vegetables reduced the likelihood of developing cancers of the head and neck. Whether it will be 200 ml of fruit juice, a medium-sized fruit or a bowl of green vegetables does not matter - the effect is the same.
The results of the third study showed that certain ingredients in citrus fruits and soy reduce the production of two proteins needed for the dissemination of breast and ovarian cancer.
