How To Cook Caramelized Red Onion With Balsamic Vinegar - Recipe

Required products :

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 red onions, cut into thin crescents
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 tablespoon moist brown sugar (eg muscovado)
  • 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

Method of preparation :

Heat olive oil in a pan and add onion and thyme. Cover with a lid and fry for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. During this time, the onion should soften and become golden.

Remove the lid and reduce the heat to low. Stir the sugar into the onion, add the vinegar and 2 tablespoons of water. Cook for another 5 minutes, almost until the water is completely straightened.

Remove from the heat and cool completely, then you can pour into bags and freeze. Before use, transfer from the freezer to the refrigerator overnight, and immediately before use, heat in a pan by adding a little water.

What to use caramelized red onions?

  • For the basis of shepherd's pie (cottage pie) or add to Bolognese sauce.
  • Spread on puff pastry, add goat cheese, thyme and bake until done.
  • Prepare gravy sauce by adding onion, toast and a little water.
