Most of us love summer and there is no way not to - sun, rest and smiles ... In addition, we can enjoy an abundance of delicious fruits and vegetables. Of course, watermelon is the favorite, so now we will pay more attention to it, because it is important to be able to recognize the ripe watermelon, as well as to be aware of whether it contains nitrates.

How do we know if a watermelon is ripe?

Many people have no idea how to choose a watermelon. They just tap their hand on the fruit, not knowing exactly what they are doing. Although choosing a delicious watermelon in appearance can be quite a difficult task, there are a few tricks that can help in this endeavor. In fact, you can tell if it's ripe without having to cut it. Here are some tips provided by experienced farmers to help you choose the best watermelon on the market.

Check the color of the watermelon

By color you can determine whether the fruit is ripe enough. The perfect watermelon should be dark green and matte. If the skin is light and shiny and the stripes on it are not clear, then the watermelon needs to ripen more.

Follow for proper shape

Take a good look at the watermelon. There should be no scars, bruises or dents on it. If you notice lumps or protrusions, it may mean that it has received an uneven amount of water or light during cultivation, which has led to its drying and inconsistency in shape.

Is watermelon "male" or "female"?

Many people do not know that farmers differentiate watermelons by sex. For example, "males" are large in size, have an elongated shape and have a watery taste, while "females" are rounded and much sweeter.

Pay attention to the weight and size of the watermelon

The watermelon should weigh. This shows that it is full of water and therefore - beautiful and mature.

Try to compare the weight of your watermelon with another similar in size. The heavier one will be more mature. This advice applies in full force to most fruits and vegetables.

Look for watermelon stains

There  is usually a spot on the  watermelon - an imprint of the place where it lay on the ground. This area should not be more than 5-10 cm. If it is larger, it means that the fruit has been lying on the soil for a long time and may be watery and tasteless. The darker the stain, the better. If its color is white or not noticeable at all, it means that the watermelon was picked too early and not ripe.

Yellow spots on watermelon are also known as field spots. Ripe watermelons have creamy yellow or orange-yellow spots, but are never white.

Mesh-like brown spots on the watermelon are formed as a result of repeated pollination of the flowers of the fruit by bees. The more spots on it, the sweeter it is.

Make a scratch on the watermelon. If you feel a strong and fresh aroma from there, then it is torn off soon.

Master the technique by tapping

The most common way to guess watermelon is by tapping. This can be a difficult task, but many watermelon fans believe that the method really works. Knock the fruit and listen to the sound it produces. It must be dense, tenor-like. If the sound is deep or muffled, it means that the watermelon is immature. If the sound is echoing - it is ripe.

Inspect the watermelon stalk

The dried tail indicates that the watermelon is ripe. If the stalk is green, it most likely means that the fruit was plucked too early and not ripe.

Do not rush to buy early watermelons on the market. As you know, there is time for everything, and the time of juicy watermelons is the second half of August and early September. Then they ripen naturally without the use of harmful substances.

In addition to coming across unripe watermelon, there is a risk to buy watermelon with harmful substances in the composition.

We all know about the nitrates contained in this sweet and juicy fruit. Is there a way to recognize such a watermelon? We hasten to answer you ... There are several ways that will help you understand whether there are harmful ingredients in the fruit or not, without the need for special devices and appliances. Meet them ...

How do we know if there are nitrates in watermelon?

  • For starters, you could ask the seller to make a triangular incision in the middle of the fruit and judge the presence of nitrates by the color of the inside. In general, they are located near the bark, which means that there the color of the soft part will be lighter than the core. That is why it is better to give children the core.
  • Also pay attention to the color of the fibers. It must be white. If it is yellow - there are harmful substances.
  • The presence of nitrates can be easily detected by placing part of the soft part in a glass and pouring water. Stir and observe the result: if the water is cloudy, the watermelon is good; and the appearance of a pink tinge indicates the presence of nitrates.
