Spices have their own and distinctive taste, but there is no culinary rule according to which you can not replace each other. Try something new to season the dishes or urgently replace one spice with another.

Unless you are growing your own herb garden, it is difficult to maintain the huge variety of spices you need in a particular recipe. And given the price of fresh herbs, it is not always profitable to buy if you need a small amount. So here are some herbs you can replace others to spice up your dish:

  • basil - thyme
  • bay leaf - to replace 1 bay leaf you can use 1/4 teaspoon dried ground bay leaf or 1/4 teaspoon thyme
  • wild onion - green onion, garlic or leek
  • coriander - parsley
  • dill - use an equal amount of tarragon
  • fennel - anise seeds
  • Italian mix of spices - basil, oregano or rosemary
  • marjoram - basil, thyme or savory
  • mint - basil, marjoram or rosemary
  • oregano - thyme or basil
  • parsley - coriander
  • rosemary - thyme, tarragon or savory
  • sage - savory, marjoram, rosemary or meat bowl
  • savory - thyme, marjoram or sage
  • tarragon - fennel seed
  • thyme - basil, oregano, savory or marjoram

If there are indicated amounts of fresh herbs in your recipe, you can replace each tablespoon of fresh with 1 teaspoon of the same, but in a dried version.
