It may sound strange, because who would complain that his cake is too sweet ... But imagine another situation: you prepare tomato sauce for spaghetti and instead of salt, sprinkle generously with sugar or you have a dish whose sauce contains cream, however, you bought a sweetened one. Yes, although the sweet taste is a favorite of most people, it does not have a place in every dish.
Let's see how we can save our food if we have mistakenly added a large amount of sweet ingredients.
It is important to know that there is no way to remove the sugar from the recipe, so it's just time to look ahead and see if and how we can eliminate the sweet taste so that the dish is still edible. Here are some tricks that will help you save food.
If the dish is very sweet, try to balance the taste so that you blunt it. To do this, you can add ingredients that are sour or bitter. You should not add salt as it emphasizes the sweetness.
SourHere it is best to add lemon juice (or lime). But be careful with the orange, because although it is sour, it contains a lot of sugar, so you will still sweeten the dish. White and wine vinegar are also good options, but balsamic vinegar, for example, is not because it is sweet. Even if you think a sauce is sour, think carefully about whether there is a sweet ingredient in it.
BitterThere are many bitter foods, but not all are suitable. If the dish allows it, you can add a little kale, arugula or chicory. But in most cases they are not inappropriate. In that case, your salvation is bitter unsweetened cocoa powder! Yes, we know it sounds weird, but add about 1 teaspoon. Be careful with the amount so you don't get a chocolate flavor, so stir, wait and try to see exactly how the flavor balances.
SpicyWhether it's hot sauce, chili peppers or ground dried peppers, adding something hot can do the trick. Remember how many sweet and spicy sauces there are? However, be careful not to overdo the spicy products, so as not to encounter another problem with taste.
If the dish is still very sweet and the listed tactics did not work, all you have to do is dilute it or throw it away.
Double the recipeThis means adding more of the same products (but this time don't add the sweet ingredient). For example, if you are making tomato sauce and the recipe is from 2 cans of tomatoes, add two more. This directly reduces the sweetness by half. You can freeze the rest of the sauce for the next use.
Discard halfDepending on what stage you are in cooking, this option can be a lifesaver. We use the example above, but this time discard half the sauce and add another can of tomatoes. This halves the sweetness while maintaining the same volume.
Start overYes, this should not be your first choice when you drop the sugar in your sauce, but sometimes the situation is inescapable. Accept failure with a smile and move on, and be much more careful in the future.
Once you have encountered the problem of sweet dishes, the next time you cook this or that recipe, start adding the sweet products in portions. Stir and wait for the flavors to combine and then try. Keep in mind that the flavors become more saturated when the dish is cold. Always try and add small portions of salt and spicy spices.
